Denisse Mateo-Chero

As a child in Peru, Denisse Mateo Chero believed that mountains were inaccessible territories that hid unknown animals. She lived the first nine years of her life before realizing the existence of the Andean bear during a photo exhibition focused on it. That realization inspired her to become a biologist and contribute to the protection of wildlife. After building her skills through different field experiences, she found her niche as an Andean bear researcher. As an independent researcher, and then as a biologist with SDZWA-Peru, she has worked in national protected areas and private conservation areas in SE and NW Peru over 12 years. Working closely with these communities in their lands has been motivating for her. She has found passionate people dedicated to making a difference for their homelands by protecting biodiversity.
